25 Days of Christmas Movies - Day 24 - A Christmas Story

Woo hoo! We are almost there! It’s Christmas Eve and today I chose my favorite holiday movie of all time: A Christmas Story (1983). First off, if you see or hear the phrase “You’ll shoot your eye out” and don’t get the reference…your life has been sadly deprived and you need to go out to Target or Best Buy or start searching Netflix or whatever movie service you use and get this movie NOW.
There is not one moment of this movie that isn’t absolute perfection and LOL funny. The deadpan perfection of narrator Jean Shepherd (the story is based on his work); the little brother in the snowsuit; the neighborhood bully; the
lesson about sticking your tongue on a flagpole in sub-zero weather; Ralphie cursing as his dad tries to change a flat tire; grandma’s bunny suit; the infamous leg lamp and the ensuing war as mom tries to destroy it; the mystery message that turns out to be an advertisement for Ovaltine; the dogs eating Christmas dinner…and of course Ralphie’s dream to get a Red Rider BB Gun from Christmas and everyone’s insistence that he’ll “just shoot his eye out”…which he almost does.

Find this movie on TV or buy it, rent it whatever...Just watch it again.

25 Days if Christmas Movies - Day 23 - Sleepless In Seattle

TWO DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS! For Day 23 of 25 Days of Christmas Movies I chose Sleepless in Seattle (1993). The story begins on Christmas so for me it counts. Plus, I love it. It’s got Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan and how can you not love them? (Even though they spend less than 5 minutes on screen together.)

Sam (Hanks) is a widower living in Seattle who ends up on a radio talk show after his son calls in and says his dad needs a new wife. Eventually, Sam starts talking about how much he misses his wife. Meanwhile, Annie (Ryan) is listening to the show in Baltimore on the other side of the country and falling in love. I honestly can’t listen to Sam’s radio confession without tearing up so it’s no wonder thousands of women start sending letters offering to be Sam’s new wife.

The movie borrows heavily from a classic film An Affair to Remember as Sam and Annie (with the help of Sam’s son) arrange to meet at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day. And the ending is perfection…

25 Days of Christmas Movies - Day 22 - Meet Me In St. Louis

For Day 22 of 25 Days of Christmas Movies I had to pick Meet Me In St. Louis (1944) starring Judy Garland. It’s probably not generally regarded as a Christmas movie. The main story is about the upcoming 1904 World’s Fair and the family’s eminent move to New York. But there is a gorgeous Christmas ball toward the end, and Judy Garland introduced the world to one of the most popular holiday tunes ever, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.

There is something so joyful and exuberant about the heyday of Hollywood movie musicals. Sure, it’s weird that people burst into song about trolleys and such, but they’re just so much fun and Judy Garland is never better.

Note: Vincent Minnelli directed the film. He and Judy Garland met on set and later married. They had a daughter, Liza Minnelli. You may have heard of her.

25 Days of Christmas Movies - Day 21 - Mickey's Christmas Carol

It’s Day 21 of 25 Days of Christmas Movies, and we are SO CLOSE to the BIG DAY. Is it cheating to pick another adaptation of A Christmas Carol? Well, I don’t care because I love Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)!

Disney took basically every character it ever created and put them together in this really great rendition of Charles Dickens' classic story. Mickey Mouse is Bob Cratchit, Goofy is Jacob Marley, Jiminy Cricket becomes the Ghost of Christmas Past while the Giant (Jack and the Beanstalk) is the Ghost of Christmas Present. Daisy Duck stands in for Ebenezer’s young love, Belle and Donald Duck is Nephew Fred.

So cute and they tell the story in about 30 minutes. What’s not to love about that?

25 Days of Christmas Movies - Day 20 - Frosty the Snowman

It’s Day 20 of 25 Days of Christmas, and we are SO CLOSE TO CHRISTMAS! Today, my pick is another classic, Frosty the Snowman (1969). It’s sweet, funny, magical fun when a snowman comes to life thanks to an enchanted top hat. Jimmy Durante is the narrator and the voice behind the classic song. When the evil magician (Professor Hinkle) realizes the hat is enchanted, he decides to get it back by any means necessary, including snowman-acide. Who doesn’t cry when Frosty gets trapped in the hothouse and melts? And I love how Santa saves the day by threatening to never give Hinkle another Christmas present.

Plus…there’s the song. Who doesn’t love the song?

Quick quiz: What does Frosty say when he comes to life?
